Haircuts are a great way to update your look, but one wrong snip and you’re DOOMED. Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but a bad haircut can be a pain to come back from. Which may be why the elite of the Upper East Side are forking over 1,000 bucks for a great chop. That’s right, women are willing to pay that hefty amount to make sure their strands are the definition of perfection. Now, the only question is, is it really worth it?
This week in Treat Yourself, Odd Mom Out’s KK Glick heads to the Julien Farel Restore, Salon, Spa & Haircare in New York City to try this costly haircut. There, KK tries the salon’s iconic $1000 Power Haircut, crafted by owner and hair expert Julien Farel, hoping to transform her “sad shoe polish-black wave of tears.”
Before giving KK the Power Haircut treatment, Farel decides to give KK highlights to enhance her natural hair color, which cost $375. This also gives KK the chance to get the inside scoop from clients in the salon to learn what makes this cut different than the rest. “He goes detail-by-detail. Literally hair-by-hair. It’s intricate,” said one client, who has been going to the salon for six years, about the cut. “You know it’s a good haircut when it grows out and it still looks good,” the client said.
Once KK’s hair is washed, she’s handed a glass of champagne, and Farel gets to work. He begins by giving KK layers to help accentuate her cheekbones, and then moves into his special technique, which is what sets this haircut apart. Farel twists KK’s hair and diligently inspects each strand to remove split ends, a technique he learned in France. “In France, actually we used to burn the split end. With fire,” he said.
After her luxe treatment, it’s safe to say that KK felt like she could easily fit in the Upper East Side, which Farel also describes as a “fashion show.” “A thousand dollars, I mean it’s bonkers,” KK said. “That was really luxurious though. If you come into some money, go get your hair cut strand-by-strand by a really bronze charming Frenchman.” See what upper eastsiders thought of KK’s $1000 haircut above.
